Alcohol may help protect the heart / Women benefit with far less intake than men, study says

"According to the authors, there are several plausible explanations for the effect. Alcohol helps raise the levels of high-density lipoprotein or HDL cholesterol and lowers plasma fibrinogen levels, which contribute to blood clotting."
